Document Details : Title: The Absent Other Subtitle: Reshaping the Concept of Intersubjectivity through an Understanding of Discourses from the History of Spirituality - A Perspective from Michel de Certeau Author(s): IOAN, Bianca Journal: Studies in Spirituality Volume: 33 Date: 2024 Pages: 1-25 DOI: 10.2143/SIS.33.0.3293654 Abstract : This article thematizes the problem of encountering the other within the horizon of spirituality, in order to highlight additional dimensions of intersubjectivity. The problem of the other is a keystone in Michel de Certeau’s works. This paper will argue that the reconfiguration of the concept of intersubjectivity can be initiated through an examination of historical and mystical discourses. In exploring the possibility of encountering the absent other, Michel de Certeau takes an in-depth look at the experiences described by mystics. This analysis underscores the multifaceted significance of intersubjectivity, highlighting its role in shaping both our shared social reality and our spiritual understanding. Pursuing a specific linguistic framework also necessitates an examination of its constituent layers; hence, a potential (de)stratification of the mystical discourses – as the final stage of a particular way of experiencing – can be delineated by following Michel de Certeau’s mapping of spiritual experience. This study will navigate this map in order to elucidate the pathways through which the concepts of spiritual experience and intersubjectivity can be interlinked. |
