Abstract :
During the Roman Empire, stone, marble and terracotta mosaic tesserae were usually made in provisional workshops located into buildings under construction or in restoration. There are few traces of stable workshops specialized in their production and trade. Raw blocks and more ancient architectural decorations and revetement slabs were used to produce tesserae, as well as tiles, bricks and ceramic vessels. The findings of unused stone and marble tesserae and processing waste mainly concern products executed in local lithotypes, while there are few examples made in marbles coming from distant Mediterranean quarries.
