Document Details : Title: Confession, Piety and Redeemed Rhetoric Subtitle: An Exhortation to Readers in Augustine's Confessions 5 Author(s): TURNER, Christina Journal: Augustiniana Volume: 73 Issue: 2 Date: 2023 Pages: 223-246 DOI: 10.2143/AUG.73.2.3292749 Abstract : In this paper, I discuss certain stages in Confessions 5 which encapsulate the path to conversion advocated by the Confessions and highlight the way in which these stages are structured for effective communication with the audience of the text. I argue that the narrative of conf. V aims to exhort its audience to recognise the pious attitude necessary for approaching truth, and a valid method of interpreting signs of the natural world, human language, and scripture. In this way I find that sensory language becomes a useful rhetorical tool, and another temporal medium, to encourage readers to approach God. |
