Defined as the 'Church of Councils', the Orthodox Church is regarded as a model or source of inspiration for the synodal 'conversion' of the Roman Catholic Church. While the formal Orthodox-Catholic theological dialogue demonstrates consensus on the issue of the synodal nature of the Church, the use of the term 'collegiality' for the bishops differentiates the two sides on a question linked to their main ecclesiological disagreement, namely the papal primacy. Pope Francis uses the two terms, 'collegiality' and 'synodality', together, but do they have similar meanings? Is there a common understanding of the synodality of bishops among Orthodox and Catholic? In order to respond to the question, this paper examines briefly the Catholic concept of collegiality and its ecclesiological context, which is the universalistic paradigm, one that challenges the ecclesiologies of both sides. |
