Abstract :
Olympichus’ letter to Mylasa, I. Labraunda 3, refers to documents sent to the polis by a royal officer named Sophron and by Ptolemy ‘the brother of King Ptolemy (III)’. A great deal has been written about the latter, the famous Ptolemy the Son, co-regent of Ptolemy II. But Sophron is also a challenging figure who deserves our attention. This paper investigates whether Sophron was a Ptolemaic or Seleucid representative when he dealt with Mylasa, the chronology of this interaction and Sophron’s subsequent career.
