Abstract :
The tight focus on Alexander’s actions of the surviving histories of his reign means that important events that occurred in his absence are passed over in silence. This paper examines one such silence: the voyage of exploration led by Anaxikrates late in Alexander’s reign. On the basis of an analysis of the limited sources for his voyage – Theophrastus’ History of Plants, Strabo’s Geography, and Arrian’s Indica – it proposes a new chronology of Anaxikrates’ voyage, its role in Alexander’s plans for his Arabian campaign, and its significance for Greek knowledge of the Red Sea and southern Arabia.
