Abstract :
This article is devoted to the analysis of the oldest layer of borrowings from Chinese to Proto-Turkic in order to date it. The first attempt to date the early linguistic contacts of Proto-Turkic and Chinese languages was made by A.V. Dybo, but it was based on outdated readings of Chinese characters and should be revised. The new dating is 6th-7th centuries AD. It correlates with the historically recorded date of the first contacts of the Chinese with the Proto-Turks of Ashina tribe. Together with the dating of the first contacts of the Proto-Turkic language with Proto-Mongolian, also defined as the 6th-7th century AD, this excludes the presence of Proto-Turks in areas lying north of China before the 6th century and put an end to the theory of the Turkic origin of the Xiongnu.
