Document Details : Title: Garlic Braids Sent by a Physician in BGU 7.1674 Author(s): LITINAS, Nikos Journal: Bulletin of the American Society of Papyrologists Volume: 60 Date: 2023 Pages: 299-305 DOI: 10.2143/BASP.60.0.3292180 Abstract : In BGU 7.1674, a private letter, a revision of the text of the first edition yields an attestation of the word σειρά (for garlic braids). Although it is an addendum lexicis with this specific meaning, it is understandable and fits the context. The sender, who is a physician, has arranged for some items that possibly concern medicine (that is, garlic) and certainly concern astrology (that is, an astrological table) to be sent to the recipient. The wording of the letter and the handwriting may also provide evidence concerning the character and education of the physician. There are other minor improvements of the text of the first edition, and, as always, because of the minimal information provided in private letters, some details remain obscure and debatable: the meaning of ἐξ αὐτῶν and ἐπεί, the direction the noun κατάπλους indicates, the provenance of the garlic, the person who sails down the river, and the reaction of a seaman. |
