Document Details : Title: Four Levantine Vessels from Predynastic Egypt in the British Museum Author(s): HARTUNG, Ulrich , FRIEDMAN, Renée F. Journal: Archéo-Nil Volume: 33 Date: 2023 Pages: 89-105 DOI: 10.2143/ANI.33.0.3292018 Abstract : Four late Predynastic vessels in the British Museum of visibly un-Egyptian character are described and compared with the imported jars in Tomb U-j at Abydos/Umm el Qaab. Three of these vessels find clear counterparts in the different ware groups of the Tomb U-j inventory, not only based on their shapes, but also on their method of manufacture and, as far as can be judged, on their clay and temper. Archival research indicates they originate from Amélineau’s excavations and almost certain derive from Tomb U-j, helping to enrich the number and types of imported vessels that can be ascribed to that tomb. The fourth vessel, which bear little resemblance to the U-j finds, was purchased at a later date, and its Egyptian provenance remains unknown. Quatre vaisselles de la fin du Prédynastique, de caractère visiblement non égyptien, conservées au British Museum; sont ici décrites et comparées aux jarres importées découvertes dans la tombe U-j à Abydos/Umm el Qaab. Trois de ces récipients trouvent des parallèles dans le matériel provenant de la tombe U-j, d’après leur forme, mais aussi leur mode de fabrication et, autant qu’on puisse en juger, l’argile et le dégraissant utilisés. Les documents d’archives indiquent qu’ils proviennent des fouilles d’Amélineau, très certainement de la tombe U-j, contribuant à enrichir le nombre et les types de récipients importés pouvant être attribués à cette tombe. Le quatrième récipient, qui ressemble peu aux découvertes de la tombe U-j, a été acheté à une date ultérieure, et sa provenance égyptienne reste inconnue. |
