Abstract :
The Gepids and Goths occupied different areas of habitation and had different military leaders: there were military conflicts between them. They left behind different archaeological cultures: the Wielbark culture in its Cecele phase (the Gepids), and the Chernyakhov culture (the Goths). The culture of the Goths (earlier shared by the Gepids) underwent significant changes under the influence of ancient civilisation. The changes in the culture of the Gepids were, however, reflected only in the transition to the later phase of the Wielbark culture. The Kachin and other treasures are associated with the final phase of the Germanic settlement in Volhynia and the south-east of Poland (the Maslomecz group). At that time the Gepids were active allies of the Huns. However, Volhynia most likely remained their rear base until the mid-5th century AD, when the opportunity to move to the Middle Danube presented itself.
