Abstract :
Assuming inner introspection as the most peculiar element of Augustine’s philosophical thought, the present study considers its influence at the origins of modernity, in a climate of renewed interest in Augustinian thought. In particular, two alternative but complementary forms of the realization of the Augustinian redi in teipsum invitation are analyzed in two authors we propose to consider as the founders of two alternative variants of philosophical Modernity: Descartes and Pascal. In both, in fact, the re-foundation of the nexus of certainty and truth passes through the introspective flexion of the cogito. And if this assumes, in Descartes, a solipsistic and individualistic fold that will deeply mark the evolution of subsequent thought, in Pascal we observe a more markedly relational, intersubjective and dialogic constitution, which will have a long following too, up to the contemporary age.
