Abstract :
In a recent paper in AWE, O. Muscarella presented an alternative chronology from that which is commonly accepted for Iron Age II sites in south-eastern Arabia. In this paper, I present a detailed analysis of 14C data and archaeological evidence that refutes Muscarella’s re-analysis. In particular, the primacy of 14C dating over stylistic/typological comparanda to poorly dated or incompletely published Iranian data is emphasised as the most appropriate means to structure Iron Age settlement in the United Arab Emirates and the Sultanate of Oman.
