Document Details : Title: Necropoleis and Ionian Colonisation in the Black Sea Author(s): DAMYANOV, Margarit Journal: Ancient West & East Volume: 4 Issue: 1 Date: 2005 Pages: 77-97 DOI: 10.2143/AWE.4.1.3291783 Abstract : In the article some observations are presented on several necropoleis in the north-western parts of the Black Sea, with focus on the Archaic cemeteries of Orgame and Histria in Dobrudja and on the island of Berezan in the Lower Bug region. The author assumes that on Berezan cremation in situ could have been the main burial rite before the mid-6th century BC. After that a new wave of epoikoi led to changes in burial practices. By contrast, cremation remained in use in Orgame and Histria up to the Roman period, but was reserved only for a part of the population — presumably the descendants of the first settlers. At the same time, inhumation was the dominant rite in the agricultural territory. |
