Various religious, symbolic, political and artistic initiatives and enterprises conducted by Heraclius and his court have been discussed. Yet, to the best of my knowledge, there has been no discussion of the act of translating St Euphemia’s relics from Chalcedon to Constantinople within the context of Heraclius’ initiatives and enterprises. The monograph dedicated to the excavations carried out at the shrine of St Euphemia’s shrine in Constantinople does not discuss most of these aspects. Here I present the act of the translation of St Euphemia’s relics within its broader historical and architectural context of the first three decades of the 7th century AD. |
