Journal: Ancient West & East Volume: 5 Issue: 1-2 Date: 2006 Pages: 80-89 DOI: 10.2143/AWE.5.1.3291741 Abstract : One of the most abundant classes of vessels produced at ancient Caere (modern Cerveteri) was impasto ware, in the shape of the brazier and the pithos, both decorated by cylinder stamps. The braziers, identified predominantly in tomb reports from the last century, are now in museums throughout Italy and Europe. But how were these braziers used in the tomb, and of particular interest, how did they function outside the tomb? New finds of braziers from domestic, civic and ritual areas of ancient Caere and beyond have recently surfaced, providing us with an interesting glimpse at the extensive use of these vessels outside the tomb. |
