Abstract :
In like manner as the Cretan cult knot is a three-stemmed variant of the Egyptian ankh-sign, the origins of the signs from the Cretan hieroglyphic syllabary are threefold, namely from (1) Egyptian hieroglyphic, (2) Luwian hieroglyphic and (3) Cretan Linear. If this Cretan knot, so to speak, is carefully untied by sound epigraphic analysis, the legends of some of the Minoan seals can be shown to contain the categories (1) man’s names, (2) titles and (3) geographic names, just like it is the case with the relevant Luwian hieroglyphic parallels.
