Abstract :
Paulus van Hemert (1756-1825), a famous Dutch philosopher, wrote ten volumes of his journal Lektuur bij het ontbijt en de thetafel (Readings at the Breakfast and Tea Table) (1804-1808) during a turbulent period in history, when the face of the world was changing rapidly. Van Hemert is known as an early advocate of Immanuel Kant (1724-1804), who employed and adapted Kant’s vocabulary to critique society. He was on a mission to influence the social and political development of his time with his ideas about justice, morality, and religion. His life and work were inextricably linked, and he was deeply concerned with removing the ideological and factual obstacles standing in the way of a humane society. In his journal, he connects elements of Kant’s teachings with his own religious, political, and social insights. Van Hemert proclaims a humanitarian ethic of faith. In line with the teachings of the Remonstrant Brotherhood and Freemasonry, he strove for a pan-Protestant community. His ideas can be considered radical because they had clear political consequences and required that specific choices be made in legislation, education, economic development, and the battle against poverty. As such, the Lektuur bij het Ontbijt en de Thetafel is an expression of his strong social and political commitment and supports the changes initiated by the Batavian Revolutionaries.
