Abstract :
In his apostolic exhortation on the Eucharist, Sacramentum Caritatis, Benedict XVI used a striking phrase, 'total existential density', as a metaphor pertaining to the eucharistic transformation of the faithful. This article explores the function and implications of the metaphor in this passage by considering the use of the same metaphor in two other passages, one from Joseph Ratzinger’s Introduction to Christianity (1968), and one from Benedict XVI’s Spe Salvi (2007). What emerges are certain distinctive characteristics of Christian life lived to the full, according to Ratzinger/Benedict. It is toward deeper acquisition of these characteristics that the faithful are led by a fruitful and transforming participation in the Eucharist, a process in which its existential density transforms theirs. The article concludes with three pastoral suggestions for eucharistically cultivating existential density.
