Journal: Recherches de Théologie et Philosophie Médiévales Volume: 89 Issue: 2 Date: 2022 Pages: 215-233 DOI: 10.2143/RTPM.89.2.3291320 Abstract : The first section of this paper applies some caveats to the common antithesis (accepted by some students of Joachim) between the 'cyclical' understanding of time in Greco-Roman paganism and the 'linear' understanding of time in Jewish and Christian thought. The second section shows that from the earliest proclamation of the Kingdom of God there was a tension in Christian thought between the expectation of a future kingdom and the belief that it had already come with Jesus. The third section compares some early attempts to resolve this problem with Joachim’s concept of the three ages, noting his relation to Augustine (whom he had read). The fourth section demonstrates affinities with the thought of Tertullian, which seem to have been overlooked in previous scholarship. |
