Document Details : Title: Predynastic Tusks and Penis Sheats Subtitle: A New Interpretation Author(s): ORRIOLS-LLONCH, Marc Journal: Archéo-Nil Volume: 30 Date: 2020 Pages: 149-167 DOI: 10.2143/ANI.30.0.3291299 Abstract : The functionality of the so-called tusks has been quite controversial among the artefacts from the Predynastic period. Based on the classification work of S. Hendrickx and M. Eyckerman, I will try to demonstrate how different types A.5 and A.6 are from other tusks through the analysis of their form and ethnographic comparison. The thesis defended in this paper is that this kind of object would be a model of penis sheath, a 'clothing' item related to hunting since Prehistory. Parmi les objets de l’époque prédynastique, la fonction des objets dénommés tusks est très controversée. Avec pour base les travaux de classification de S. Hendrickx et M. Eyckerman, j’essaierai de démontrer, par l’analyse de leur forme et par comparaison ethnographique, combien les types A.5 et A.6 diffèrent des autres tusks. La thèse défendue dans cet article est que ce type d’objet serait un modèle d’étui pénien, attribut «vestimentaire» des cultures liées à la chasse depuis la Préhistoire. |
