Document Details : Title: Conative Animal Calls in Xhosa Subtitle: Testing the Prototype Author(s): ANDRASON, Alexander Journal: Africana Linguistica Volume: 28 Date: 2022 Pages: 25-54 DOI: 10.2143/AL.28.0.3291207 Abstract : The present article analyzes the non-formal (semantic and pragmatic) and formal (phonetic, morphological, and syntactic) profile of Conative Animal Calls (CACs) – a subtype of conative interjections by means of which human speakers influence the behavior of animals – in a southern Bantu (Nguni) language, Xhosa. After testing 40 Xhosa CACs for their compliance with the cross-linguistic prototype of CACs postulated recently in scholarly literature, the author concludes that, with minor exceptions, Xhosa CACs comply with the prototypical features. This corroborates, in turn, the typological validity of the prototype of CACs, although certain refinements also seem necessary. Le présent article analyse le profil non formel (sémantique et pragmatique) et formel (phonétique, morphologique et syntaxique) des appels conatifs d’animaux (CACs) – un sous-type d’interjections conatives au moyen desquelles les humains influencent le comportement des animaux – dans une langue bantu méridionale (nguni), le xhosa. Après avoir testé 40 CACs xhosa pour leur conformité avec le prototype interlinguistique des CACs postulé récemment dans la littérature scientifique, l’auteur conclut que, à quelques exceptions près, les CACs xhosa sont conformes aux caractéristiques prototypiques. Cela corrobore, à son tour, la validité typologique du prototype des CACs, même si certains raffinements semblent également nécessaires. |
