Abstract :

This article studies the articulation of Lebensphilosophie and Spanish philosophy from 1900-1930, through three thinkers: Miguel de Unamuno, José Ortega y Gasset and María Zambrano. Essentially the aim is to analyse their relationship with European (mainly French and German) «philosophy of life», while considering how these Spaniards formulated an idiosyncratic filosofía de la vida. Thus Unamuno and Zambrano deploy a philosophical «new culture» «in the flesh», while Ortega, although strongly influenced by the German philosophers of life, seeks to surpass the philosophers of life with his «ratiovitalism», proclaiming himself the arbiter of «the theme of his time».
