Journal: Ephemerides Theologicae Lovanienses Volume: 98 Issue: 2 Date: 2022 Pages: 261-292 DOI: 10.2143/ETL.98.2.3290791 Abstract : One of the most original features of Maurice Blondel’s philosophy is his discussion of transcendence and the concomitant characterization of the relationship between the natural order and the supernatural. The forerunners are Léon Ollé-Laprune (in his reading and critique of Malebranche) and Charles Secrétan. The seminal discussion in L’Action (1893) that drew theoretically on a relatively obscure issue in Leibniz’s philosophy led (and still leads) to more confusion than clarity so that Blondel found it necessary to revisit and reformulate the earlier material in significant ways throughout his career. In doing this he often drew on a range of thought-provoking metaphors to help elucidate this most fascinating and penetrating dimension to his life’s work. |
