The theological underpinning of Søren Kierkegaard’s authorship raises all sorts of questions about his ethical viewpoints. Although one can discuss if and what sort of ethics he has developed, there is a fundamental conviction to be discerned throughout his thought. That conviction is formulated by his pseudonym Johannes Climacus: as an existing and ethical being the individual 'stands alone'. This article tries to understand and explain Kierkegaard’s central existential claim, by connecting it to three fundamental characteristics of the ethical demand. In doing so, references are made to Knud Ejler Løgstrup, Maurice Blanchot and Emmanual Levinas, who in their own way have discussed the isolated nature of the ethical subject. |
