Journal: Le Muséon Volume: 135 Issue: 1-2 Date: 2022 Pages: 93-110 DOI: 10.2143/MUS.135.1.3290653 Abstract : Nathniel of Shirzor is a late 6th/early 7th-century East Syriac writer, whose surviving biographical data and works are investigated and presented in four parts in this paper: 1) a detailed examination of Nathniel’s life and works, 2) an introduction to and exploration of his Cause of the Psalms, an introductory treatise to the book of Psalms and his only surviving work, 3) an annotated edition of this text (produced from all known, accessible manuscripts containing this text), which will supersede Bernhard Vandenhoff’s 1899 edition, which is based on a faulty (now inaccessible) manuscript, and 4) an English translation of the edited text. |
