Abstract :
H. Röhl (1851-1923) was a German Gymnasium teacher, a specialist of Greek epigraphy, and a Latin poet. He once obtained (1918) the gold medal in the 'Certamen Hoeufftianum', the Amsterdam contest for Neo-Latin poetry. A scrutiny of the archives of that competition revealed that his poems had earned an honourable mention at Amsterdam more than once, but that he refused to have his poems published by the Dutch Academy since he had not received the gold medal. One of his forgotten Latin gems is the 1902-1903 poem Capreae, dealing with the Italian island of Capri, which was very popular with German and British tourists of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. In this article, the poem is presented, edited and contextualized.
