Abstract :
This paper explores the history of the Greek word στερέωμα, which is used in the LXX to mean 'heavenly firmament'. It surveys the Classical Greek usage of the word and discusses the possible reasons for its LXX usage and the influence of the LXX on the subsequent Greek literature. The last part of the paper claims that the peculiar usage of the word in the LXX may explain the way the opening lines of Genesis are quoted in Pseudo-Longinus’s On the Sublime, and that this, in turn, may shed additional light on the origin of the quotation.
