Journal: Pharos Volume: 24 Date: 2018-2020 Pages: 37-75 DOI: 10.2143/PHA.24.0.3289831 Abstract : This paper presents the results of a macroscopic analysis of an assemblage of Mycenaean ceramic roofing tiles recovered from Dimini (Thessaly, Greece). Both pan and cover tiles were found among the remains of the settlement’s substantial Megaron A complex. Although few in number, the fragments are preserved well enough to provide a secure identification and offer important evidence about their production. After presenting such data, other essential information about the assemblage, and the tiles’ form, dimensions, fabric, and architectural contexts, I consider the potential motivations for the adoption of this new architectural technology at Dimini. I argue that the tiled roof was a monumental expression that conspicuously advertised the inhabitants’ ability to marshal diverse resources and manpower. At the same time, the roof attests to a desire to affiliate with the Mycenaean centres in Central Greece and a broader ‘Mycenaean’ identity. |
