Journal: Biblica Volume: 102 Issue: 3 Date: 2021 Pages: 386-400 DOI: 10.2143/BIB.102.3.3289781 Abstract : The book of Acts describes Paul interacting with 'devout women of high-standing' in Antioch of Pisidia, Thessalonica, and Berea. These were likely groups of influential Gentile women who regularly attended a local synagogue. In the first instance, Paul’s experience was negative, and this group of women turned against him. But in the next two instances, Paul found favor with them and they willingly received 'the word of the Lord'. This paper argues that Luke intentionally contrasts these similar groups of powerful women in order to offer strategies for engaging similar social groups in a Hellenistic milieu. |
