Document Details : Title: Immanuel Kants transcendentale logica Subtitle: Singulier, algemeen, heterogeen Author(s): HAECK, Levi Journal: Tijdschrift voor Filosofie Volume: 83 Issue: 2 Date: 2021 Pages: 217-248 DOI: 10.2143/TVF.83.2.3289684 Abstract : In contrast to Herman De Vleeschauwer, I argue that the ‘Analytic of Concepts’ of Immanuel Kant’s first Critique (1781-7) should not lead to the conclusion that objects are actively and unilaterally constituted by subjects. Instead, I argue that object constitution, which involves the determination of sensible intuition under categories, presupposes a reciprocal dynamic between generality and singularity. I illustrate this dynamic in two steps: firstly, by defending the long-contested view that the category of totality (which is general in nature) must be derived from the singular judgment; and secondly, by reading it into the chapter on the transcendental deduction of the categories. In doing so, I considerably rely on De Vleeschauwer. However, I take this dynamic to imply, contra De Vleeschauwer, that the subject is fundamentally a ‘divided subject’ that has a passive role in the determination of sensible intuition under categories. This allows me to propose that the constitution of the object goes hand in hand with the constitution of the subject itself. |
