Abstract :
On June 26 and 29, 2020, the members of the Ecclesial Conference of the Amazon (CEAMA) met for the first time. This contribution studies the long genesis and recent origin of this completely new synodal institution, which emerged from the conclusions issued by the Special Assembly of Bishops for the Amazon in October 2019 (Final Document No. 115). The history and origin of the conference are the subjects, respectively, of the first and second parts of this contribution. The third part is devoted to examining CEAMA’s statutes (and their preamble) as presented to Pope Francis at the end of June 2020 for his approval and promulgation at the formal establishment of this new institution. The statutes and preamble betray their canonical originality. The conclusion to this contribution highlights some implications of the synodality implemented by CEAMA, whose creation challenges the Catholic Church as a whole and, in particular, the Churches of ancient Christianity and of the European Continent.
