Abstract :
The Armenian version of the grammar (Τέχνη γραμματική) attributed to the Greek grammarian Dionysius Thrax is not, strictly speaking, a translation of the Greek text, but rather an adaptation of the latter to the Armenian language. It was made using the procedures specific to the Hellenising School (Yunaban dproc'), namely a systematic tracing of the Greek original and not an authentic form of the classical Armenian. This Armenian version of Dionysius has many unique words that do not appear elsewhere in ancient Armenian literature. Linguists generally consider these to be pure and simple inventions due to the imagination or the systematic mind of the translator. In fact, a careful examination shows that many of these elements did exist, and that they provide a valuable tool for analysing many of the words used in the classical language. This shows the interest of the Armenian version of the Τέχνη γραμματική for the history of the Armenian language.
