Abstract :
The contribution discusses the morphological status of Old Armenian eloy, which appears in particular in Old Armenian translations of the so called Hellenizing School in constructions rendering a Greek genetivus absolutus in the singular. To the present day there exists a tradition, current in Armenian philology, which interpretes the form as the genitive of an infinitive el. Corresponding renderings of a Greek genetivus absolutus in the plural using the genitive plural eloc' show that eloy cannot be the inflected form of an infinitive, but must be the homonym form of the corresponding participle (the inf. el and the participle eal both being artificial innovations of the Hellenizing School). The error is due to the existence of the competing rendering of Greek genetivi absoluti by a construction using the instrumental elov of the infinitive el, which misleads to understanding eloy as an inflectional form of the same infinitive.
