Document Details : Title: Due nuovi oleifici di Volubilis in Mauretania Tingitana (Marocco) Author(s): BIGI, Leonardo Journal: Latomus Volume: 79 Issue: 2 Date: 2020 Pages: 299-316 DOI: 10.2143/LAT.79.2.3288652 Abstract : After more than a hundred years of excavations the site of Volubilis in Mauretania Tingitana (Morocco) has revealed 58 oil mills in less than 40 hectares, i.e. the highest concentration within an urban environment in the Roman Empire. Despite the great importance of this site in the field of economy and society of Roman provinces, few studies have been dedicated to its olive oil production, and the absence of a detailed archaeological documentation has hindered topographical and statistic studies. Some scholars, when evaluating the number of oil mills in Volubilis, provide inconsistent, and often wrong, information based on foregoing researches or erroneous assumptions. In the last 30 years new areas have been brought to light and a new field research has been dedicated to this topic. This article aims to clarify the question by updating the number of workshops, providing maps of distribution, and some further analysis. It also focuses on two recently discovered and unpublished oil mills. |
