Nous mettrons ainsi en lumière l’imbrication fondamentalement philosophique des énoncés politiques de Godefroid de Fontaines et rehausserons celle-ci d’une lecture contextuelle réflexive, marquée par l’éminence magistrale, qui révèle le caractère éminemment élitaire de la pensée politique du Liégeois, fondée sur l’articulation des statuts sociaux avec les vertus individuelles. Pour ce faire, nous revaloriserons la place centrale qu’occupe la prudence dans la pensée du maître. The aim of this article is to rethink the socio-political philosophy of Godfrey of Fontaines, avoiding the pitfall whereby the historiography of Liège had maintained the excessively democratic orientation of the most recent reinterpretations of the theologian’s work, while at the same time seeking to go beyond the simple observation of the existence of a correlation between the hardening of the social philosophy of the master and the fiscal context in France. Thus we seek to bring to light the fundamentally philosophical intertwining of the political statements of Godfrey of Fontaines and to enhance it with a reflective contextual reading, characterised by his eminence as a master, which reveals the eminently elite character of the political thought of the thinker from Liège founded on the coordination of levels of social status with individual virtues. To achieve this goal we seek to restore prudence to the central place it occupies in the thought of the master. |
