Abstract :
This essay is a tribute to the work of Johann Baptist Metz, who died at the age of 91 on 2 December 2019. With the help of his collected works of which the final volume was published in 2018 by Johann Reikerstorfer, Metz’s development is described and the lasting influence of his work is assessed. More than his mentor Karl Rahner (1904-1984) and his friend Edward Schillebeeckx (1914-2009), Metz presents his theology as based on the remembrance of suffering, which implies not just a theoretical, but also an existential question. The main aim of his ‘political theology’ is to prevent this question from being overlooked. The heart of his theology was formed by what his assistant of many years, Tiemo Reiner Peters (1938-2017), has called conversio ad passionem. As the importance of this is constantly at risk of being forgotten in our current academic and theological climate, Metz’s essays deserve to be read and re-read regularly.
