Abstract :

The study of the reception of Qohelet shows that this book has never ceased to disturb the Jewish and Christian exegetes. As a matter of fact, it is only in the 19th century that some exegetes agreed to comment on this book without seeking to water down in any way its theology, its eschatology and its anthropology. In addition, one may wonder about its reception among poets, writers and philosophers. Have they always and essentially been inspired by the exegetical and theological comments on this book? Or, on the contrary, have they freed themselves from them? What interpretations of the book of Qohelet have they proposed and for what purposes? These relevant questions have not yet received all the exegetical attention they deserve. In this article, the author endeavours to provide some answers while limiting his inquiry, first, to the literary corpuses of some poets, writers and philosophers who lived between the 16th and the 21st century and, second, to two specific themes: enjoyment and death.
