Abstract :
Λύττιος was a type of wine produced at the Roman town of Lyttus. It is attested by 66 tituli picti. Most of them were written in the Crétoise 2 amphorae type. This paper explores such evidence by analysing amphorae sets, epigraphy and the ancient literary sources. An interpretative framework on Crétoise 2 contents shows how these amphorae were reused in Latin and Greek contexts, as well as some tituli were translated into Latin. Wine was the principal content, probably the raisin wine generically known as passum Creticum. Some arguments are proposed in order to explain the possible differences between Λύττιος and the others raisin wines. Such an appellation based on the name of a town was unusual, so some special conditions on the history and geography of Lyttus have been put in relation to explain the epigraphic evidence.
