Yet one cannot deny that theoretical frameworks and methodological issues are still far from being well established and widespread. Furthermore, research quality is also hampered by the poor circulation of existing literature. Thus even recent publications still use outdated terminology and linger in categorisations that are unsustainable in the light of the critical corpus of written and archaeological sources. This article briefly discusses a new theoretical approach to the concept and materiality of a Roman road station and to the archaeology of what is commonly – and too often improperly – labelled as cursus publicus or imperial post. New avenues of research are proposed in the light of innovative and interdisciplinary frameworks. |
