Abstract :

The Battle of Bapheus, which is precisely dated by Georgios Pachymeres as the 27th of July 1302, seems to be a milestone in the invasion of Asia Minor by the Turks. Even though historians tried in vain to find the corresponding story in Turkish chronicles, they nevertheless wanted to recognize the victory of the Ottomans as the source of their tribe’s autonomy and the date of the foundation of the Ottoman state. But the defeat of the Byzantines at Bapheus is only important for the defeated, because the foundation of the Ottoman state precedes it by a few years, and historians agree to place it in the year 1299. In this article, we review the passages in Georges Pachymérès’ History that relate the clashes between the Byzantines and Turks at the turn of the two centuries. A new analysis of the text makes it possible to rectify, in the annotation of the edition, some points that have been misinterpreted, in particular the Sangarios flooding, which opened the territories on the left bank of the river to enemies, territories which until then had been made safe by an abundance of fortresses. The Sangarios did not flood in 1302, but a few years earlier, perhaps in 1299. It is unrelated to the Battle of Bapheus.
