Document Details : Title: The Fronted-Infinitive Construction in Fwe Author(s): GUNNINK, Hilde Journal: Africana Linguistica Volume: 25 Date: 2019 Pages: 65-88 DOI: 10.2143/AL.25.0.3287232 Abstract : This paper discusses the form and functions of the fronted-infinitive construction in Fwe, an understudied Bantu language of Zambia and Namibia. The Fronted-infinitive construction consists of an inflected verb preceded by an infinitive copy of the same verb, and is used to mark verb focus or progressive aspect. This paper argues for an analysis of this construction in Fwe as a type of cleft construction, which accounts both for its deviant formal properties, such as its relative clause tone pattern and its unexpected order of infinitive-auxiliary, and its use as a marker of verb focus. Although this paper focuses on the fronted-infinitive in a single language, the cleft analysis of the fronted-infinitive in Fwe raises interesting questions about the structure and diachronic development of similar constructions in other Bantu languages, as well as about the time depth of this construction in the Bantu family. Cet article étudie la forme et les fonctions de la construction avec infinitif antéposé dans la langue fwe, langue bantu peu étudiée parlée en Zambie et Namibie. La construction avec infinitif antéposé consiste à faire précéder un verbe fléchi par la forme infinitive du même verbe, et est utilisée pour marquer le focus verbal ou l'aspect progressif. L'article propose de considérer cette construction en fwe comme une forme de construction clivée, considérant à la fois ses propriétés formelles déviantes, tels le schème tonal de sa proposition relative et l'ordre inattendu infinitif-auxiliaire, et le fait qu'elle soit utilisée comme marqueur de focus du verbe. Bien que cet article se concentre sur l'emploi de cette construction dans une seule langue, l'analyse de l'infinitif antéposé en fwe en tant que construction clivée fait apparaître d'intéressantes questions quant à la structure et au développement diachronique de constructions similaires rencontrées dans d'autres langues bantu, ainsi qu'à la profondeur temporelle de cette construction dans la famille bantu. |
