Until now, the focus of attention has been on the legal and canonical side of the actions of the Church, while the consequences of the sexual abuse crisis for theology (ecclesiology, Christian initiation, liturgy, spirituality, moral theology, et cetera.) still have to be evaluated. Among these long-term consequences there is the issue of the relations between Church and State. This article focuses on some aspects of the relationship between Church and State affected by the abuse crisis: the First and Second Vatican Council dispensation for the Church and the Holy See; the bishops’ appointments; the new Catholic laity and the influence of private wealth; the many diverse Church-State arrangements in global Catholicism; the role of secular justice and the media in the repositioning between Church and State. The sexual abuse crisis in the Catholic Church suggests that the parallelism between church and state that was once generally accepted, has now collapsed. To the Catholic Church, this presents a political problem, but also a theological problem, particularly in this crisis of multiculturalism and the role of the laïcité in the national and international liberal order. |
