Document Details : Title: De 'geest van Vonka' of hoe een 'slechte vertaler' de Nederlandstalige literatuur propageerde Author(s): ENGELBRECHT, Wilken Journal: Spiegel der Letteren Volume: 61 Issue: 1 Date: 2019 Pages: 25-56 DOI: 10.2143/SDL.61.1.3286676 Abstract : In this paper Rudolf J. Vonka (1877-1961) and his translations of Dutch and Flemish works into Czech will be discussed. Vonka was the second most important Czech translator of Dutch and Flemish literature between both World Wars. Later generations of translators found, however, that his translations were often rather paraphrases of the original text. His way of translating became even proverbial as ‘Vonkův duch’ (the ghost of Vonka). The paper tries to give an insight into this translator and his work, as well as to give an answer why his often incorrect translations propagated Dutch literature that much. |
