The surviving manuscripts however strongly suggest that it was a much appreciated text in the Middle Ages. This article is devoted to an analysis of the way Die Rose relates to its French source. It combines an analysis of the most important shifts on the macro level (the omission of the discourses of Nature and Genius) with a micro analysis of the rendering of La Vieille’s speech. Shifts on both levels suggest that Heinric wanted his version of the Rose to be a more unified art of love, in which the cynicism regarding courtliness and courtly love was attenuated. |
