Document Details : Title: Voir une première fois, ou expérimenter sa propre naissance Subtitle: Herzog, Kaspar Hauser, Deleuze Author(s): JANVIER, Antoine Journal: Tijdschrift voor Filosofie Volume: 81 Issue: 1 Date: 2019 Pages: 151-182 DOI: 10.2143/TVF.81.1.3286547 Abstract : This text provides an analysis of Werner Herzog’s film, The Enigma of Kaspar Hauser (1974), based on Deleuze’s Cinema 1 reworking of Emmanuel Carrère’s interpretation of Herzog’s cinema. Herzog’s film thus appears less as a critical reflection on the excesses and forms of alienation of modern civilization, and more as a metaphysical experimentation: the experimentation of our birth, our first encounter with the world. In this perspective, the article conducts a double investigation: an investigation on the theme of the 'fall', and its anthropological and metaphysical implications, central to both Herzog’s cinema and Deleuzian aesthetics; as well as an investigation into the problem of space, which is at the heart of the way of feeling experienced by Kaspar Hauser’s character. This approach allows for a fruitful hybridization between the reading of the film by Deleuze and the theoretical work carried out by Fernand Deligny since the Cévennes’ attempt with mutic autistic children. |
