L’ouvrage rassemble huit textes rédigés entre 1980 et 2005 qui forment ensemble le corpus de son féminisme phénoménologique. Elle entreprend d’y explorer «ces expériences corporelles ordinaires par lesquelles la plupart des femmes s’identifient spécifiquement en tant que femmes», tout en repérant et dénonçant les contraintes qui pèsent sur elles et qui limitent tout à la fois leurs opportunités et leur liberté. L’originalité de la démarche de Iris Marion Young se condense dans ce défi: tenir ensemble l’analyse de la subjectivité féminine (concept de corps vécu) et la compréhension des soubassements sociaux de la domination masculine (notion de genre). Si l’expérience corporelle des femmes est révélatrice de leur condition aliénée, elle témoigne aussi de la liberté qui est la leur de répondre de façon personnelle et émancipatrice aux contraintes sociales. The volume brings together eight publications dating from 1980 to 2005, which together constitute the corpus of her phenomenological feminism. In it she undertakes to explore «those ordinary body experiences with which most women identify specifically as women», while identifying and denouncing those constraints that weigh on them and limit both their opportunities and their freedom. The originality of Iris Marion Young’s approach can be summed up in this challenge: bringing together the analysis of female subjectivity (the concept of lived body) and the understanding of the social bases of male domination (notion of gender). If the body experience of women reveals their alienated condition, it also bears witness to the freedom that is theirs to reply in a personal and emancipating way to the social constraints. |
