Inspired by Pope Francis’s Apostolic Exhortation, Amoris laetitia, we reflect on both contemporary marriage and cohabitation and seek to make faith-sense of them. To do so, we come to the experiences of marriage and cohabitation with a Catholic faith and attempt to allow that faith to enter into dialogue with the experiences of both marriage and cohabitation and the effect those experiences have on the Christian lives of couples living together. The trajectory of the essay is easily described. We isolate and examine three bonds in Catholic marriages, a bond of love, a bond of law, and for those who are truly believers a bond of sacrament, and we inquire into the presence of those same three bonds in the cohabitation we shall call nuptial cohabitation. |
