Under the reign of Heraclius silver coinage resumed a crucial role in the monetary system of the Eastern Empire: was his ἑξάγραμμον μιλιαρήσιον really an abrupt departure from Late Roman silver coins? The μιλιαρήσιον of Leo III set the standard for the silver coinage of Byzantine Empire until the reform of Basil I: did Leo just copy Arab dirham? This paper explores the relationship between both denominations and their Late Ancient forebears in order to give new perspectives on the actual roots of Byzantine μιλιαρήσια.
