Schelling was an inspiration, directly or indirectly, to those who philosophized about violence in the 19th century. Though Schelling never treated the subject of violence in great detail, it is possible to reconstruct, from a number of scattered notes, a consistent position, which sees the possibility of violence as the inability to develop dialectically and organically. Since Freud, violence has primarily been understood as an expression of regression, but Schelling adds that regression, by itself, does not suffice to explain violence. Violence occurs when certain forms of progress or expansion occur overly artificially in such a way that they cannot organically mediate with nature. |
