By focusing on the question of the meaning of the manifestation, Patočka highlights the plural dimension of this meaning. Against an effort to impose a unitary meaning on the phenomenon, which would be a totalitarian enterprise, the phenomenological attempt to liberate the meaning of phemomena amounts to laying the foundations for an authentic political life where citizens are not shackled by ideologies. Thus, the épochè appears to be a very powerful tool to the extent that it achieves the goal of dissidence that Patočkian phenomenology pursued. We suggest reading The Natural World as a Philosophical Problem through the perspective of dissidence, as it helps understand the impact this work had on Czech dissidents. The peculiar position of Charter 77 can be explained within the framework of a struggle for the liberation of the meaning of phenomena. |
